One of the best things that travel gives us is the memories of the places we’ve visited and the special experiences we had there. In order to hold on to these precious memories, we often bring home souvenirs. These souvenirs tend to be objects like postcards, fridge magnets, and key chains. However, a souvenir doesn’t have to be something purchased in a gift shop. In fact, the word souvenir means “memory” in French, so whatever brings back memories could be called a “souvenir.” Then what can we keep as souvenirs to preserve our travel memories other than ordinary gift shop products? Let’s look into what other travelers do to make their travel memories last longer.

 

 

여행의 추억을 간직하는 방법

 

여행이 우리에게 주는 최고의 것들 중 하나는 우리가 방문했던 장소들에 대한 추억들과 우리가 그곳에서 가졌던 특별한 경험들이다. 이런 소중한 추억들을 간직하기 위해 우리는 종종 집에 기념품들을 가져온다. 이 기념품들은 엽서, 냉장고에 붙이는 자석, 열쇠고리와 같은 물건들이기 쉽다. 하지만, 기념품이 선물 가게에서 구입한 것일 필요는 없다. 사실, souvenir라는 단어는 프랑스어로 ‘기억’을 뜻하므로, 기억을 떠올리게 하는 것은 무엇이든지 ‘souvenir’라 불릴 수 있다. 그렇다면 우리는 여행의 추억을 간직할 기념품으로 선물 가게의 평범한 제품들 외에 무엇을 간직할 수 있을까? 다른 여행자들은 그들의 여행의 추억을 더 오래 간직하기 위해 무엇을 하는지 살펴보자.

Make a Plate with Your Travel Maps

 

Buying souvenirs and taking photos can be good ways to remember a trip, but most of the time I would store these things somewhere and hardly ever look at them, and thus they would be slowly forgotten. So I came up with my own method of preserving memories in a more interesting and visible way. 

 

I started doing this two years ago when I got an opportunity to travel around Europe with one of my best friends. It was a spontaneous trip, so we relied mainly on paper maps from hostels or tourist information offices. Every day, we planned our route and sightseeing stops on those maps. When I returned home, I realized I had accumulated lots of these maps, and suddenly I thought I could make a souvenir out of them.

 

I began by cutting out some landmarks from the map that showed the best parts of our trip, such as the Eiffel Tower, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Colosseum. Then I got an ordinary plate and pasted the map pieces onto it using special glue. Finally, I put a layer of sealant over the whole plate so that the paper wouldn’t fade or wear out over time. The result is a wonderful decoration that I can look at every day. It is also a terrific reminder of every place I visited.

Keep Charms on a Bracelet

 

Shortly after my wedding 30 years ago, I went on a road trip with my husband. We started in New York City and drove across the entire country to San Francisco. There, at a tiny souvenir shop, my husband found a bracelet charm in the shape of the Golden Gate Bridge. When I saw this cute little charm, I thought it would be a great souvenir to remember the trip, so I bought it to hang on my silver bracelet. This turned out to be the beginning of a lifelong tradition.

 

After a few months, my husband and I got a chance to travel to Moscow. There, we happened to find a tiny St. Basil’s Cathedral charm and it reminded me of the first charm from San Francisco. Without a moment’s hesitation, we bought it to add to the bracelet. Since then, we have managed to find the perfect charm on every trip. We now have nearly 20 different charms—one from each trip. We have a Taj Mahal charm from India, a Parthenon charm from Greece, and even an elephant charm from Kenya. As my children grew up, they helped choose some of the charms, so our whole family can look back at every trip we’ve taken together.

Save Your SIM Cards and Hotspots

 

Whether it’s for uploading status messages and selfies on social networks or for looking up the best restaurants, staying connected online is not an option but a must for many travelers these days. However, finding an affordable way to get a reliable connection when traveling overseas can be very challenging. So I buy a SIM card when I get to a foreign country. At a reasonable price I can get the same connection speed as the locals. That’s not all. Because countries all have different telecommunication companies, each SIM card is a unique souvenir of my trip to that country. What’s more, as SIM cards don’t take up luggage space, they’re very easy to take home. I have a collection of nine already, and it’s growing fast!

Another thing I collect might sound strange: Wi-Fi hotspots. Whenever I’m in a place I want to remember, I purposely connect to the Wi-Fi. Then, the hotspot name is automatically stored on my phone from that time on! Occasionally I glance through the list of all the museums, resorts, restaurants, and other places I’ve visited in my travels. Although I can’t connect to these hotspots when I get home, just catching a glimpse of one of their names on the list makes me excited. All the memories from that place come flooding into my mind, and I can remember exactly what it was like to be, for example, at that peaceful terrace near the shore in Bali. For a moment, it’s almost like I’m actually there!

 

 

내가 모으는 또 다른 것은 이상하게 들릴지도 모르지만 와이파이 핫스팟이다. 기억하고 싶은 장소에 있을 때마다 나는 일부러 와이파이에 연결한다. 그러면, 그때부터 그 핫스팟의 이름이 자동으로 내 전화기에 저장된다! 가끔 나는 내가 여행할 때 방문했던 모든 박물관, 휴양지, 식당과 다른 장소들의 목록을 쭉 훑어본다. 비록 집으로 돌아오면 이 핫스팟들에 연결할 수는 없지만, 그 목록에 있는 이름들 중 하나를 힐끗 보기만 해도 나는 신이 난다. 그곳에서의 모든 추억들이 마음속으로 물밀 듯이 밀려들어 오면서, 나는, 예를 들어 발리 해안 근처의 그 평화로운 테라스에 있던 기분이 어땠는지를 정확하게 기억해 낼 수 있다. 잠시 동안, 마치 내가 실제로 그곳에 있는 것 같다!

Make Friends and Keep in Touch

 

For me, the best souvenirs are new friends I make while traveling. Obviously, I can’t put the people in my suitcase to take them home, but while we’re together, I can have conversations and laugh with them. Sometimes I add them on social media or ask for their contact information so that I can stay in touch with them.

 

Two years ago I made friends with an elderly couple from Japan I met at the Jeonju Hanok Village. While in the restroom, I happened upon a woman’s bag. Right away, I took it to a nearby police station. When I got there, I met an elderly couple who had come there looking for their lost bag. Happily, the woman was the owner of the bag that I had found, so I handed it to them.

 

They were so thankful that they treated me to dinner, and we had a great time together. We still keep in touch, and last year they even visited my home in Gyeongju. For me, this proves that a good relationship is the best souvenir, because it can make the memories of a trip last for a long time.

 

 

효정 (18세, 한국): 친구를 사귀고 연락하며 지내라

 

내게 있어 최고의 기념품은 내가 여행하는 동안 사귀는 새로운 친구들이다. 분명, 내가 그 사람들을 내 여행 가방에 넣어서 집으로 데려올 수는 없지만, 우리가 함께 있는 동안 난 그들과 함께 대화하고 웃을 수 있다. 가끔 나는 그들과 연락을 유지할 수 있도록 그들을 소셜 미디어에 추가하거나 그들의 연락처를 물어본다.

 

2년 전 나는 전주 한옥마을에서 만난 일본에서 온 노부부와 친구가 되었다. 화장실에 있는 동안, 나는 우연히 어떤 여성의 가방을 발견했다. 곧장, 나는 그걸 근처의 경찰서로 가져갔다. 거기 도착했을 때, 나는 잃어버린 가방을 찾아 그곳에 와 있던 노부부를 만났다. 다행히도 그 여자분이 내가 발견한 가방의 주인이어서, 나는 그걸 그들에게 건네주었다.

In the end, travel is really about personal memories and unique experiences that will color your soul and enrich your life. So the next time you think about grabbing a souvenir as a reminder of your trip, remember: whatever captures your own priceless moments will be better than any souvenir you can easily buy with money.
