The Two Brothers

 

 

 Two brothers went on a journey. They found a rock in front of a forest. It said, “Go into the forest and swim across the river. There you will find a bear and her cubs. Take the bear cubs and run up the mountain. There you will find happiness.”

 

 

 The younger brother said, “Let’s go and find happiness together.” “No,” said the older brother, “How can we know this is true? What if the river is too wide? Besides, will it be easy to take the cubs away from their mother? Instead of finding happiness, we can be killed!”

 The younger brother replied, “How can we know if we don’t try?” They separated, and they both went their own way.

 

 

 The younger brother went into the forest and swam across the river. There was the bear. She was sleeping. He took her cubs and ran up the mountain.

 

 

 When he reached the top, some people took him to their city and made him their king. There he lived as a king for five years. Then a war broke out, and he lost his throne. He was on the road again.

 

 

 One day, the two brothers met again and talked about their lives for the last five years. The older brother said, “I was right. I have lived quietly and well. You were once a king, but you have had a lot of trouble.” The younger brother answered, “I don’t regret my choice. I may have nothing now, but I will always have something to remember.”
