중학교2 동아출판 이병민 – Lesson4 Go for It!
Too Hot to Run
Imagine you are in the middle of a great desert. The sands go on and on in every direction. The sun feels like a giant ball of fire. The hot wind burns your face and throat. You open your backpack to drink some water. Oh, no! You’re almost out of water. You wet your throat with a drop of water and keep going.
Sounds like a bad dream? Well, this is not a dream for the people who take part in the 4 Deserts Race. The 4 Deserts Race is a series of four races across the world’s toughest deserts. Each race is 250 kilometers long and takes seven days.
The first race takes place in the Atacama Desert in Chile. It is the driest desert in the world. In fact, it hasn’t rained in some parts of the Atacama Desert for 400 years! The next race goes to the Gobi Desert in China. It is the windiest desert on earth. The third race heads to the Sahara Desert in Egypt. It is the hottest of the four deserts. Temperatures can reach up to 50°C. Finally, the race travels to the coldest desert on earth, Antarctica. If you throw boiling water into the air here, it freezes!
Only the greatest runners on the planet can take part in the 4 Deserts Race, right? Not exactly. Many of the participants are ordinary people like you and me. So why do they do it? Adrianna, a librarian from France, says, “It’s a chance to test your limits and make your own history. Anyone who crosses the finish line can do anything.”
