생각의 지도

 

Sumin, a Korean ex-change student in America, asks a question to her teacher, "Mr. Mann, do we bring our own lunch to the school trip tomorrow?" 

미국의 한국인 교환학생인 수민이는 그녀의 선생님에게 질문을 했습니다. “Mann선생님, 우리는 내일 학교 소풍에 도시락을 가져와야 하나요?” 

 

The teacher looks puzzled, thinking that Sumin wanted to eat lunch with him and asks back, "Uh.. Sumin, who are WE?" 

선생님은 혼란스러워 보였고, 수민이가 그와 함께 점심을 먹기를 원한다고 생각해서 “음, 수민아, ‘우리’가 누구니?”라고 되물었습니다. 

 

Sumin does not understand why Mr. Mann is confused and answers, "Me and my friends!" 

수민이는 Mann선생님이 왜 혼란스러워 하는지 이해하지 못했고 “저랑 제 친구들이요!”라고 대답했습니다. 

 

He thought of "we" as "you and me." 

그는 “우리”를 “너와 나”로 생각했습니다. 

 

Here, the misunderstanding arises from the different definitions of "we" that the Korean student and the American teacher have.

여기서, 한국인 학생과 미국인 선생님이 가지는 “우리”의 다른 정의에서 오해가 발생합니다.

 

So why do these two cultures have different ways of thinking? 

그렇다면 왜 이 두 문화는 다른 사고방식을 가지는 것일까요? 

 

What impact does culture have on cognition?
