반면, / 서양의 종이는 펄프로 만들어지는데, / 부스러지기 시작하여 / 사용할 수 없게 된다 / 100년이 지나면 

 

It's easy to understand / why Koreans created the old saying / about hanji: / "Paper lasts a thousand years, / while silk endures five hundred." 

이해하기가 쉽다 / 왜 한국인들이 옛말을 만들었는지는 / 한지에 대해 / “비단은 오백 년을 가고, / 종이는 천 년을 간다.”는  

 

In addition to lasting a long time, / hanji keeps heat and sound in / but allows air to flow through it easily. 

긴 시간을 가는 것 이외에도 / 한지는 열과 소리를 잘 보존하지만 / 공기는 쉽게 통과하게 한다. 

 

The paper also absorbs water and ink very well, / so there is no bleeding.

또한, 한지는 물과 잉크를 잘 흡수하여 / 번짐이 없다.

 

Because of hanji's characteristics, / Koreans could see early on / that it was more than just something to write on. 

한지의 특징 덕분에, / 한국인들은 일찍이 알 수 있었다 / 한지가 그 위에 글을 쓰는 용도 이상의 것이라는 걸

 

 

반면, 서양의 종이는 펄프로 만들어지는데, 100년이 지나면 부스러지기 시작하여 사용할 수 없게 된다. 왜 한국인들이 한지에 대해 “비단은 오백 년을 가고, 종이는 천 년을 간다.”는 옛말을 만들었는지는 이해하기가 쉽다. 긴 시간을 가는 것 이외에도 한지는 열과 소리를 잘 보존하지만 공기는 쉽게 통과하게 한다.  또한, 한지는 물과 잉크를 잘 흡수하여 번짐이 없다. 한지의 특징 덕분에, 한국인들은 일찍이 한지가 그 위에 글을 쓰는 용도 이상의 것이라는 걸 알 수 있었다.

Koreans have also used it / to make furniture, lanterns, wedding accessories, and boxes. 

한국인들은 또한 한지를 사용해왔다 / 가구, 초롱, 혼례 장신구와 상자를 만드는 데

 

Due to its durability, / hanji was even used in battle.

내구성 때문에 / 한지는 전장에서도 사용되었다. 

 

Back then, / people would put many layers of hanji together / to make suits of armor. 

사람들은 여러 겹의 한지를 합쳤다. / 갑옷을 만들기 위해 

 

This armor, called jigap, / was tough enough to stop arrows.

지갑이라고 불리는 이 갑옷은 / 화살을 막을 만큼 충분히 단단했다.  

 

With so many uses, / hanji is naturally considered / an invaluable part of Korean history and culture.

이렇게 많은 용도로 인해, / 한지는 자연스럽게 여겨졌다. / 한국의 역사와 문화의 매우 귀중한 부분으로 

 

 

고대부터, 한국인들은 한지를 벽, 문틀, 그리고 집 바닥에 붙여왔다. 한국인들은 또한 가구, 초롱, 혼례 장신구와 상자를 만드는 데 한지를 사용해왔다. 내구성 때문에 한지는 전장에서도 사용되었다. 그 당시, 사람들은 갑옷을 만들기 위해 여러 겹의 한지를 합쳤다.  지갑이라고 불리는 이 갑옷은 화살을 막을 만큼 충분히 단단했다. 이렇게 많은 용도로 인해, 한지는 자연스럽게 한국의 역사와 문화의 매우 귀중한 부분으로 여겨진다.
